Destination: Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta, originally a sleepy fishing village, has since been discovered as a perfect coastal getaway in Mexico for those looking for a more cultural alternative to the over-commercialized feel of towns like Cancun and Cabo. The region offers long, sandy beaches, lush mountain jungles, sparkling waterfalls, ocean coves, as well as gourmet restaurants and boutique shops, and historic mountain towns and surf retreats nearby.
Historians believe humans settled in the area as early as 500 BC, and that Aztecs likely ruled over the area early on. In the 1500s, it’s believed Spanish missionaries and conquistadores took control of the region due to the strategic value of Banderas Bay. The city’s proximity to the ocean, access to agricultural towns along the Ameca River, and proximity to nearby mining towns in the Sierra have long attracted residents and added to its history over the years.
The city’s Banderas Bay, one of the largest and deepest bays in the world, can be seen from many points of the verdant hills of Puerto Vallarta and offers endless water sports. Long beaches around the Bay beckon to those looking to relax, while adventurers can dive, surf, snorkel, hike, or ride horseback in or around the city. For those looking to simply explore, the town’s Malecón boardwalk and many cobblestone streets in the Zona Romántica provide great avenues for a relaxing stroll.
